Hi, I’m Martha. Welcome to my delicious Alaskan life! This blog is inspired by my life in Alaska. The food we eat is so profoundly impacted by where we live and the culture there, I couldn’t see a way to separate the two. You’ll find mostly recipes, but also Alaskan adventures, gardening, and lifestyle topics.
The food will be largely plant focused with some vegetarian, and seafood ingredients making an appearance from time to time. The reason being is simply because that’s how I really eat. I find my recipes to be easily adaptable to all diets. For instance if I make a Vegan Burrito Bowl, but you prefer chicken to tofu, feel free to sub that out and customize to your taste! Everyone is welcome, this is a judgement free zone.
I was raised in a log cabin in the woods. It was a quintessential Alaskan childhood. We lived at the end of a long dirt road, where there were no neighbors in sight. My brother and I would literally get lost in our own backyard. My mom had a large vegetable garden, that seemed as though it could be swallowed up by the nature surrounding it at the slightest neglect from human tending. My dad hunted moose right behind the house, one year he shot a bull moose from his bedroom window, much to my mother’s surprise who was asleep in their bed! Like most kids though, I didn’t really realize what I had, until it was gone.
It’s funny how we spend our youth trying to find ourselves, only to return to the same place that we started from. I guess what I’m saying is that now, at 30, I’m craving a return to my roots: with lots of nature, wide open spaces, eating what I grow, and trying to soak up every beautiful moment of this life. Afterall, we only get one, and it’s short!
Most of the topics that I’m going to share with you, I am not an expert in, I’ll be the first to admit it. But I’m willing to put myself out there and learn as I go, and hopefully help some of you out along the way. Let’s learn and grow together!
